Paul Gauguin

Galerie Alaux is proud to present Paul Gauguin as one of our master artists.
We are pleased to offer an exclusive selection of original works by this bold artist, whose vision radically transformed late 19th-century art and anticipated many modern movements. The pieces available in our gallery reflect the spiritual depth, chromatic richness, and creative courage that defined his legacy.

Paul Gauguin (1848–1903), born in Paris, is one of the great pioneers of modern art. He began his life as a stockbroker before dedicating himself entirely to painting, guided by an inner impulse that led him to seek an art that was more authentic, freer, and more connected to the essence of human beings.

Initially associated with Impressionism, he soon moved away from that movement in search of a more symbolic, emotional, and intuitive expression. His style evolved toward Synthetism, characterized by simplified forms, flat and vibrant colors, and a spiritual intention. In his works, Gauguin not only depicted what he saw, but also what he felt and dreamed, thus paving the way for Symbolism and, later, Expressionism.

The most emblematic period of his career began when he traveled to French Polynesia, seeking to escape the Western world, which he considered artificial and decadent. There, in Tahiti and the Marquesas Islands, he developed his most characteristic visual language: exotic women, tropical landscapes, local mythology, and an intense palette saturated with mystery and sensuality. Works such as “Where Do We Come From? What Are We? Where Are We Going?” express profound existential questions wrapped in a fascinating and radically innovative aesthetic.

Gauguin was not only a painter: he also explored sculpture, ceramics, printmaking, and writing, always guided by an inner need to break with norms and seek truths beyond the visible. His art challenged academic conventions and anticipated many of the aesthetic revolutions of the 20th century, directly influencing artists such as Matisse, Picasso, and the Expressionist movement.

At Galerie Alaux, it is a privilege to present original works by Paul Gauguin, a testament to an artist whose tireless pursuit of the essential left an indelible mark on art history. His legacy continues to inspire those who see art as a gateway to the spiritual, the symbolic, and the human in its purest form.
